Literary Device Toolbox List


Metaphor- comparison between two things that are basically unlike but have something in common

Simile- comparison between two things using like or as

Plot

Theme- Underlying message of a story

Imagery

Tone

Inference
Alliteration- repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words
Personification- When human-like traits are given to animals, objects or ideas.
Allusion- Indirect reference to a different literary work or famous person or place
Hyperbole- truth is exaggerated for emphasis
1st person POV- story is told from the narrator’s point of view. Pronouns used- I, we, us
3rd person POV- Story told from narrator outside of the action. Pronouns used- He, she, they
Omniscient POV- when the narrator sees into the minds of all the characters in a story
Theme- underlying message about life or human nature that the author wants the reader to understand
